THE ORIGIN OF ST. ANTONY AND THE GUILD(1232)
The Guild of St. Antony of Padua is in international organization with its Headquarters at Crowley Sussex,EnglandUnited Kingdom- now recolated Padua, Italy. The devotion to St. Antony started after the burial of St. Antony on 17th day of june 1231 being Tuesday. St. Antony died on Friday, june13th 1231. He was buried on the followingTuesday 17th. No miracles occurred during the interval, but on the Tuesday his funeral procession was changed into a continuous triunphal ovation on account of the number greatness of the miracles that occurred.
The blind saw,the deaf heard, the dumb spoke and the lame walked again. On that day no one inveked the aid of the Saint without obtining relief. From then on out gratitude, the people consecrated Tuesday to the onor of the Saint. Crowds gathered at his tomb on that day preference, and it was and still is the general belief in Padua that one can obtain on this day whatever is asked of a God through St. Antony. This practice, which had spread far and wide, received a new impetus centuries afterwards. A noble Lady in Bologma in 617 besought a favour from Saint Antony with much fervour. For twenty-two years she had desired in vain that her marriage might be blessed with offspring.
One night she show the Saint in a dream. He said to her: “Visit my shrine in the church of the Franciscan for nine Tuesdays, and you prayers will be heard” . The pius womangladly obeyed the directive of the Saint, and obatined the favour she ardently desired. This happy response to prayer was soon broadcast abroad, and the devotion of the nine days began to be practiced by countless souls. The fervour ofthe faithful, however, was not satisfied with devoting only nine Tuesdays in honour of St. Antony, but gradually the number of tuesdays was increased to thirteen , in remembrance of the date of his blessed death, or rather then date of his birth into eternal glory, which was June 13, 1231.
